Baby showers are one of the best ways for new moms and dads to get everything the need to start off on the right foot. It allows family and friends to show the mom-to-be how much love and support she has. In the past, it was often viewed as improper to hold a shower for a second child, seeing as the parents were not likely to need much, especially the “big” items. You can now hold a shower for a second baby, if you take certain things into consideration.
The shower could be a mini-shower focusing on those essential items that every baby needs, no matter how many older siblings – like diapers, undershirts, and bath accessories. You can also make a list of whatever the parents say they need but did not receive with their first child. Or, instead of a baby shower, you can have a mom shower, asking guests to bring gifts that mom will appreciate as her delivery date approaches. You can choose items that will be a treat, like a thick, sweet-smelling body lotion, or something more practical, like an extra-large handbag.
It’s also a fun idea to have a shower where all the gifts are for mom – but are not related to being a mom, like a flirty nightdress or sexy nail polish (for when she can see her toes again!). You might want to arrange for tickets or gift certificates to some special event or treat, like a concert or spa day – but be sure to include babysitting. Another idea is to have a planning meeting with dad and the guests before the party, in order to schedule days and times where help is likely to be needed, using a dry-erase calendar.
You can include activities like getting the house in order while mom’s in the hospital, helping run the older child to school or lessons, or even being an extra pair of hands during a big grocery trip or errands day. You can then give mom the finished calendar at the shower, with all the contact information in case of changes. There are situations where neither baby nor mom are in need of any new items. You can choose to commemorate the upcoming event with a simple party with her friends and family.
An optional activity is to have guests purchase small baby items and then donate them to a local shelter or charity. A “freezer party” is another practical theme for a shower, where everyone comes with a freezeable or easily-stored dish of food. During the final days of pregnancy and the first week after the birth, mom will definitely appreciate this. You’ll need to be sure to have this kind of a shower near the due date, and also let the mom know so she can clear out enough space for all of the yummy food.
Lastly, if the new baby is what is often known as a caboose baby (several years younger than the next brother or sister), you can still hold a full baby shower. A lot of moms and dads won’t likely have even the big items (cribs, etc.), anymore, or they could be outdated in terms of safety requirements.
No matter what kind of shower it is and what kinds of gifts are given, don’t lose sight of the main reason you are there – to show the mom-to-be your love and let her know that you are there for her and her new baby.
