The Caribbean island of Jamaica is known for many things, sandy beaches, reggae music, Bob Marley as well as coffee. The high regard for Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee among avid coffee consumers has sent its price up to between $46 and $60 a pound. True to its name, Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is grown in the Blue Mountain area of Jamaica, located between Port Maria in the north and Kingston to the south. Reaching a height of 7,500 feet, the Blue Mountains are the highest point in the Caribbean. The area is characterized by wet, cool weather and rich, dark earth with good drainage, perfect prerequisites for growing coffee. Although coffee isn’t native to Jamaica, it is the island’s main export.
Not just any old type of coffee can call itself Jamaican Blue Mountain. Jamaica’s Coffee Industry Board certifies every bag of beans to ensure that only the highest quality beans display the prestigious trademark. The Board only recognizes beans grown in particular Jamaican parishes: St Mary, St Andrew, St Thomas and Portland.
The geographical region that grows Jamaican blue mountain coffee is relatively small and can only produce a certain amount of coffee. The limited availability, the supreme quality resulting from pains taking cultivation, the alluring aroma and the renowned name of Jamaican Blue Mountain have undoubtedly contributed to its reputation as one of the most desired coffees in the world – more so than columbian coffee, or French roast coffee, for instance. So long as hard-core coffee-drinkers continue to demand it, it will be also one of the more costly.
