Drapes With Pleats – Fabulous Window Treatment

December 23rd, 2009

In case you are thinking like me, you could sense that gathered curtains or draperies seem to be so much better if every pleat is uniformly identical. Accomplishing that is easier than you might think. There are essentially 3 special methods to approach the difficulty and I assure that, one way or another, you can get it. At times even pleated window treatments call for coaxing if the material is spongy or stiff and, of course, the greatest method is to choose a smooth flexible material in the very first place. This is not at all times achievable so lets chat about how to form wonderful pleats in spite of what material is used even including silk window treatments or lace fabric or a hard old-fashioned satin.

In case the drape fabric is quite workable the easiest first attempt would be to put in the window treatment, draw each panel to single side and physically assemble the pleats evenly. Then tie them back moderately loosely both near the peak and at the base edge. Once this is ready you can drench the front and back  of the pleats lightly with a mixture of water with a small amount of alcohol added. Do this using a very faint spray devoid of soaking the fabric. You just want a spray on the surface. You could also stroke your fingers lightly on every fold while they are still damp forming them into a pleasant curved figure. Leave them for a couple of days. The shape of the pleats will seriously improve, hopefully to the stage that they are satisfactory without further fussing.

If the pleats are still flaring the next method is to employ what in the drapes craft is referred to as “shot tape” or in textile stores as “leaded weight tape”. It consists of a lengthy, very small diameter cotton tube that is filled with a single column of approximately 1/8 inch lead balls to outline a uninterrupted string. Place this cord in the bottom hem from one side of the panel to the another one. That adds weight to the curtain. You can now place the pleats a great deal more easily. After you have set them equally they have a propensity to remain where you have placed them because of the added mass and the relative unwillingness of the string to unbend.
