The Dark Side of Fad Diets

December 2nd, 2009

A diet that is written only to be followed for a short time is called categorized as one of the fad diets.  The term has also come to mean any diet that explodes into national or international fame, only to plummet into obscurity. The Hollywood diet, the Atkins diet, and Jenny Craig are just three examples. Check out the Every Other Day Diet review and Cheat Your Way Thin review. They have been proven to work quite effectively for fat loss and they both talk about lifestyle diet rather than simple fad. Are they telling the truth or are they FAD as well?

Fad diets are a subcategory of food fads. This refers to any form of food that becomes popular for a short period of time. Common aspects of these fads include:

-    The food is attributed with miraculous powers.
-    Many other foods are completely eliminated from the diet, because they are thought to have negative properties.

One of these fad diets that has these elements is the Atkins diet. In Atkins carbohydrates must be avoided because of their negative characteristics. Carbohydrates take on both of the common elements in that removing carbohydrates from the diet creates a near magical metabolic state in which fat is burned at an incredible rate.  Although it is a long-term diet, it did have short phases during which carbohydrate cutting was taken to the extreme. But Dr. Atkins did intend that people could eat this way for the rest of their lives.

The Atkins diet was also one of these fad diets in that huge popularity was fairly short-lived. For a number of years the Atkins diet was everywhere, and everyone seemed to be following it .  People from Hollywood actors to politicians were all on the Atkins diet. When Dr. Atkins died to superstardom of his diet died with him.

Many fad diets can be quite dangerous.  Even a diet like the Subway diet, as first presented in the commercials, could have problems. It revolves around the extreme weight loss case of Jared who ate Subway sandwiches and baked chips to lose over 250 pounds in the span of a single year. In reality Jared cut his caloric intake from over 10,000 calories a day to only 900.  Such an extreme level of caloric intake cuts and rapid weight loss is unhealthy. Even so, the Subway diet when followed in moderation can work.  Particularly because the diet included exercise — Jared walked 6 miles a day while losing the weight. Let’s talk about workouts. The newly released Warp Speed Fat Loss program claims to melt MORE than 2lbs of fat per week. Would one call it a Fad WORKOUT?

Beware of fad diets. A healthy combination of reasonable diet and exercise in the long-term can help you lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
