As a mom, I know just how important home organization is for families.  If our house wasn’t organized, I know life would be so much more stressful and chaotic.  We are a busy society, busy with school, work, sports, hobbies, volunteering-you name it and someone is doing it.  Home organization is the key to keeping it together.

Here are three tips that work for our home to get you started:

Home Organization Tip # 1-The Calendar

The calendar is key; I would be lost without my calendar.  It’s important to use only one calendar.  If you use more than one, you risk forgetting to transfer an event to one of them and missing something important.  It doesn’t matter what you use-a day planner, a computer calendar or a PDA, just use one and use it consistently for all events big and small.

Home Organization Tip # 2-Prepare the Night Before

There’s nothing worse than trying to get the kids off to school and having someone realize they can’t find something they have to have that day.  Make sure you check the calendar the night before in case anything you are doing the next day requires preparation.  Then have your kids get backpacks loaded for the next day as well as make lunches.  That’s when you will catch that form that needs to be signed or that field trip check that needs to be written.

Home Organization Tip # 3-Help Kids Succeed With Homework

Make sure your kids have everything they need to get homework done easily.  Create a mobile caddy stocked with supplies such as glue, pens, pencils, ruler, scissors, crayons, etc.  Help kids decide where they are comfortable working.  For some kids it’s on the floor, for others at the kitchen table, some kids may prefer to be alone working quietly in their room.  Be sure to give your kids a stacker or letter tray where they only place homework so they know right where to go when it’s time to work on it.
