Top Industry Layback Mixing and Mastering for Audio CD Projects

October 17th, 2009

Mastering engineers have thousands of recording and mixing techniques to make top notch CD’s and Albums. Steve at www.stevethomasmastering.com does analog mastering which is one of the best secrets of top producers now. As most everything is mixed in the digital realm, the best mastering engineers will do what’s called analog mastering. What happens is the digital recording is converted back to an analog version in order to be mastered through original analog processors, though in many instances it is also recorded to an two-track machine to acheive the warmth that original analog tape gives to the sound. It also takes the brittleness away from purely digital recordings, and can even out the bottom end giving the bottom frequencies that rich analog sound.

The fact is the pros for outweigh the cons. Analog mastering can cost a little more than traditional purely digital mastering, since it takes more time and there are the costs for the analog tape, but for important projects, it can be the last step in accomplishing the top quality for the project. The reason for this is digital recordings sound more brittle to a lot of people because no matter how loud the sound gets, digital gives you accurate yet flat reproduction. Analog tape, however, softens as the signal increases in level, so peaks are rounded instead of clipping, which translates as a warm, rich sound as the harmonic series is smoothed over. To the listener, this sound is much more nice to listen to. Also, a hotter input signal will result in a bigger difference. As the highs soften up first, this means that as the signal becomes louder, the highs naturally smooth out a bit, creating a less brittle, and a nicer recording.

There are different mastering studios around the world that have the equipment to do analog mastering, however, you also need to have a solid professional with the background to get optimal results possible with the tape machines. I have tried a few studios and one of incredible sounding is www.stevethomasmastering.com. He is a top analog mastering engineer, yet he also has done 1000s of albums as a mixing engineer as well. On top of that, his results rivals some of the most expensive mastering houses in the country. If you already have someone you are working with there’s nothing wrong with that. But, I would definitely to check him out.
