Understanding the Importance of Controlling Cholesterol

November 5th, 2009

Some time ago I was diagnosed with very high cholesterol levels. Until then, I didn’t realize just how little I knew about the condition, but, when he explained just how dangerous this was, I decided that I had best learn all I could. I’ve learned a lot since then, and have now gotten my cholesterol under control. Now, I’d like to use this small space to explain why getting control of your cholesterol levels is so important. Hopefully, you’ll also see why limiting foods high in cholesterol from your diet can be of tremendous benefit to you.

Cholesterol is a vital building block for your body. For our purposes, just understand that it is used by every cell in your body much as a bricklayer uses mortar. Your body also uses it to make bile acids that are used in your intestines.

Your body makes most of the cholesterol it needs in your liver. An enzyme known as low density lipoproteins, or LDL, delivers the cholesterol to your cells. Cells that have enough cholesterol will simply signal the LDL to move on.

When the LDL has cholesterol left over, the problems begin to arise. The extra cholesterol is deposited on the inner wall of an artery by the LDL. Sooner or later, the deposits will choke off the artery, starving the tissue that is further down. This is a major cause of strokes and heart attacks.

This is a very basic discussion, of course. I only wish to get you thinking about your own cholesterol levels.
